SPT

I resolve to take more self-portraits doing things I enjoy.

I really enjoy the 1 1/2 hours that Cali and I have to spend together when Katya's in preschool 2 days a week. It is great to just have one-on-one time with her. We usually end up running errands, but it is so much fun. She enjoys having mommy to herself sometimes. It's great.

Gotta Love Holidays

Jethro had last Monday off and the girls love it. We went to the aquarium with his friends from work and it was so much fun. The girls loved the other kids and most of the fish. Cali was actually pretty afraid of the fish and would cry hen we took her close to the tank. She did really love the jellyfish and spent a lot of time there with her dad. At least she loved something. Katya on the other hand loved everything about it, especially crawling through the tunnels. We'll have to make a point to go on a non-holiday next time. It was very crowded.

SPT

This week I resolve to take more self-portraits while trying new things. This week I am trying out my new craft area. I found fabulous shelves at IKEA. I sure love that store. It has been a long dream to have all my craft stuff in one place. With our small apartment and two little girls I doubted it would happen. Let's hope this new arrangement works.

A Bunch of Videos

Even though I have been working, we have still taken some videos.

The first video is Cali getting ready for her bottle. She always lies down when it is time for her bottle. No matter where she is, she lies down. If she is in her high chair and we say bottle, she lays her head on the tray. She makes us laugh every time she does it.

In this second video, Cali got stuck in a bucket that we keep their living room books in.

This last video is of Katya at her preschool. She is so cute when she interacts with other kids and adults when she is not around us. She pushes in her chair at one point here, and she has been doing that with her chair at home, too.

Why am I so excited for this week?

  1. Jethro gets to come with us to the aquarium today.
  2. Get some fabulous shelves from IKEA to make my craft area better.
  3. Play N' Learn.
  4. Katya has no appointments this week.
  5. SPT
  6. Cleaner living room.
  7. Girls are walking a lot more.
  8. Rose bushes are under control.
  9. Fun Scout activity.
  10. Budget.
  11. Homemade Bread.

Quote of the Year

I really wanted a good, solid quote to go along with my word of the year. It took a while, but I found one I really like that conveys what I want my word to mean.

Be not the slave of your own past ... plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep, and swim far, so you shall come back with self-respect, with new power, with an advanced experience, that shall explain and overlook the old.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

SPT

I resolve to take more self-portraits with the ones I love.

Sadly enough, there aren't many pictures in the girls scrapbooks with me in them. I want them to know that I was there. I love being able to spend every day with these two beautiful girls. I'm glad that Jethro gives me the opportunity to stay home and watch them grow. Too bad they are growing up to fast.

Curly Girly

I will be sad when Cali's hair no longer looks like this after a bath. I just wish it would stay this way when it dries. I love baby curls!

Why am I so excited for this week?

  1. No more going to Provo for Jethro!
  2. Jethro officially has his Master's degree.
  3. Katya's therapy appointments are early in the morning when she is happy and willing to cooperate.
  4. Play N' Learn.
  5. The Biggest Loser.
  6. Girl's Night Out.
  7. Possibility of a nice relaxing weekend.
  8. Homemade Bread.
  9. Split Pea Soup.
  10. Scrapbooking projects.

Snip, Snip, Chop Chop

I don't like getting my haircut. I am afraid of stylists because I'm afraid of a bad haircut. I know it's only hair, but it is just a fear of mine. It takes me awhile to work up the nerve to cut my hair, but when I decide to cut it, I want it done immediately. Luckily, I have found a fabulous hair stylist (thanks to my wonderful sister-in-law Rebekah) who I trust completely with my hair. I went in on Thursday and told her to cut it all off. I knew she would do a fabulous job so I was excited to have her do it.

Before

After

All in all, she cut off at least 8 inches. It feels so much better, lighter, and my kids aren't pulling it. Ahhh, I think I'm beginning to love getting my hair cut.

Word of the Year - Jethro

Many people do New Year's Resolutions this time of year, but I have always thought that the reason those never stick is because people wait until a new year and then pile everything and decide they are going to change something about themselves. When I want to change something, I try to do it right away. If I don't do it, it must be because I don't really want to.

My wife does this thing where she creates a word of the year to help guide her thoughts and dreams for each new year. She makes goals that she will think of when she sees or hears that word. I like this idea.

Now that I have completed my Masters program in Educational Leadership, I can breathe. Recently, the desire to make the rest of my life more balanced has been weighing heavily on me. When you are in a graduate level program, it is pretty difficult to find time for much of anything that is not related to school. As Mrs. P. said once, homework follows you everywhere. Every time you think of something, homework is associated with it. The dentist has finally pulled that piece of gauze out of my mouth and, while there is that strange feeling of a void, it is refreshing and feels marvelous. The pain and frustration are over (for the time being). I have let other areas of my life slip by the wayside, and although my relationships with my wife and two beautiful daughters (one born 6 weeks before my first class and the other at the half-way point) have not slipped too much, there is much that needs fixing.

So, for 2009, I am going to have a word that will help guide my life and bring me to better balance. The word is муха (pronounced moohkha). It means fly in Russian, as in the bug, not the verb.

I chose the word that means fly because when I want something, I want it now. I need to teach myself to do things in little parts. The fly in the picture above is supposedly only 1.5 mm long. That is pretty small. It will be a reminder of how I can accomplish big things by focusing on small sections individually. I can't do everything all at once, but I can do a little bit each day. As I do that, I will not only fulfill my goals, but I will become a better person.

There are four areas of my life that I need to keep balanced:
  1. Faith
  2. Family
  3. Work
  4. Learning
What I want to do is work on every part in little increments. Anything more than that would be detrimental to my sanity.

Faith - Those who know me personally know that this is the most important thing in my life. It doesn't always show, though. The fact that I chose a Russian word is symbolic to me. I know Russian because I served a mission for my church in Russia, in Siberia, no less. It was almost the best two years of my life (I subscribe to my father's positive adage that the last two years of my life have been the best two years of my life, and it is true, by the way). The Russian word will remind me that not only did I have a great experience there, I don't need my spirituality to slacken because I am not completely and totally focused on that. Most of the things that I need to improve in this area really are little things that should not be difficult, but somehow they are.

While I was on the mission, I kept a journal every single day. I could not have done anything better than that. This year, I want start transferring all those journal entries to a digital format. The current plan is to do blog posts for each day from my mission. It took me two years to fill those seven books, so I don't expect that it will take any less than two years to complete the task of transferring them. Little steps. Those two years gave me an immense amount of spiritual growth, and I think a way to keep growing is to catalogue those experiences with a little more wisdom and maturity to find the really important things.

Family - My daughters need their daddy. My wife needs her husband. Having been gone nearly all the time it seems for the last two and a half years, I have let these amazing people slide to the background. This last semester I realized how important they are to me. In the summer, I was gone almost every day from sun up to sun down. I had my internship and classes, and meetings for work (and that dreaded "H" word). I rarely saw them. For the last four months with very few exceptions, I have come home and played with the girls. I have let Staci do her thing, for the most part. This has made our relationship better, the girls are happy, and I am happy. I am going to make sure that when the girls are awake, I am there for them, as much as I can be. I am going to focus on time in smaller segments. I will spend three minutes helping Katya with her physical therapy or speech therapy, or anything else she needs. I am going to give my emotional Cali the time and attention that she needs (I am sure those teenage years with her with seem like an eternity).

Staci wants to go on more creative and interesting dates, and I am going to work hard to make sure we do that. Babysitting volunteers can sign up in the comments.

Work - I am so busy at work. It is great, but I hate being so busy that I don't ever have time to do everything. I have started using the Tasks feature in my Gmail account since it is always open. That has and will continue to help me to break things down in small chunks and get things done. I have missed a lot of opportunities to apply for administrative jobs, and this year, I want to take small steps to make sure that I don't miss those opportunities this year. That includes things like creating a good resume, searching for openings in different places, and being prepared to make things happen when the time is right. The important thing here is just doing a little bit each week to improve my situation. I think I can do it.

As far as teaching goes, it is my current job, and I better excel if I want a shot at moving into a better position. So, I am going to spend more time creating good, effective lessons that will help my students succeed. I'm not devoting a hundred hours to this, but when I plan a lesson, I will take just a little more time and think those ideas through a little bit more before I commit to any plans.

Learning - I really debated whether I wanted this to be last or third. I would say that learning is my hobby. I love learning about anything.

When I was in college I was a taking a web design class where I was learning how to write HTML and CSS code for designing web pages. My brother George did not understand why I was taking that class. I said that I felt that the Internet would be an important part of all our lives in the future, and I wanted to understand better how it worked. I figured it would only help me. He said that it was like everyone having a car. He said that there will be "internet mechanics" who will work on our Internet for us. Mostly, this is correct. Since I took that class in 2005, the Internet has changed a lot. Anyone can create a Web site that is much better looking than one that I could design. You could make 50 web pages before I could design one. Nonetheless, I feel that I learned valuable knowledge in that class. It helps me virtually every day. It taught me to think in a different way which has become very valuable in work and at home. Honestly, I think it has made me more optimistic: I believe there is a solution to every problem.

This year, I want to learn how to write applications. I have never done anything like this, but I am very interested in it. Ever since Apple qnnounced that anyone could develop applications for the iPhone, ideas have been hanging out like an old college friend who could never decide on a major. I doubt that I will ever make any money developing software, but if I can improve my students' educational experience through a program that I write, I will be a happy camper.

I hope that this year, I can learn some new things, be a better husband and father, and improve in ways that I feel deep inside are very important.

Have a Good Life.

SPT

This year I decided to rejoin SPT (Self-Portrait Tuesdays). I quit last year because I hated how I was looking in the pictures, but this year I don't care how I look. I also figure that is is probably the only time I will make it in pictures since I am the one usually taking them. So without further ado, my first SPT of the year.

I resolve to do more self-portraits.

Doing what I do every Tuesday.
(I know I'm not showing much of my face, but it's a start.)

Cali's favorite view

Anytime Cali is on the Lovesac she wants to be lifted up to the window to see outside. She especially loves to look out at the snow. The only problem is that she is very particular how it must be done. Poor Jethro can only do it for so long and I just can't do it at all. When it is time for her to come down she won't let go of the window sill and will sometimes just hang there or giggle.

Backpack, Backpack

Katya received a cute little backpack for Christmas and loves it. She has learned how to put it on all by herself and was so proud to show me. She also loves opening it and zipping things in the pocket. She laughs after she unzips it and pulls out her toy. I love how kids can be so easily entertained.

One proud little girl.

Katya has started to do this face a lot when something is funny or when we
try to take her picture.

Seconds before Cali slyly pulled Katya down.

Sweet Katya

Friday afternoon I came back from the store and found this wonderful sight.

Katya couldn't stay asleep because she was so congested so Jethro brought her into the living room and she fell asleep on him- something she never does. (Jethro isn't actually asleep in this picture- he is just blinking while watching a football game.)

Since Katya can crawl out of her be, she usually wakes up at 7:30 and comes crawling out, even if she is still tired. Yesterday she crawled outright as I was getting out of the shower. I fed her and set her on the couch and turned on PBS so I could get ready. She sat so cute for maybe 5 minutes (which she never does). She is just so cute.

Word of the Year

I really enjoyed having a word of the year last year that I decided to do it again this year. All year I thought about my word and it really made a difference. I loved having a word for my whole year than just a list of goals. I loved how everything tied together and I was constantly thinking about all the ways I wanted to improve myself.

In order to be able to do my word for this year, I need to review for myself how last year went.

Here are the ways I want to MOLD my life:
  • Physically- No more being lazy. I'm going to work out at least twice a week. I need the energy to play with the kids. I started on a pretty good foot and then I just gave up. After giving up I realized that my kids needed me to have more energy because they are getting more energy and I want to keep up. I will definitely work on this one with a different approach.
  • Spiritually- I need to read the scriptures more and be more involved in discussions at church on a regular basis. This also involves going to the temple at least once a month. I still need to work on the reading part, but I did participate in discussions more, but definitely need to do that even more. We almost made our goal of at least once a month temple attendance and I feel guilty that we didn't. I really want to accomplish that in 2009.
  • Financially- Be more balanced financially and look to the future. It's still not easy to do, but I think I am more focused and looking to the future at what we can accomplish. We did pay off our car so our only debt is student loans. I am very excited about that. I love to budget and will definitely keep that up.
  • Intellectually- Read/Listen to more books on many different subjects and by many different authors I was able to do this more than in 2007, but 39 wasn't a big number. I also didn't get any books read for the last 3 months of 2008. Bummer.
  • Relationships- I want to grow closer to Jethro and I want to mold our relationship into one of greater love and understanding. I want to mold the relationships with my girls into something that they will always remember. The thing I love about a marriage relationship is that thee is always room for growth. I am lucky to have married a man who is willing to work as hard at our relationship as I am. This year I realized that communication is the key. Jethro isn't a mind reader and so if I tell him what I expect instead of having him guess, we are both a lot happier. That realization has improved our relationship. I also spent more time taking time for the girls. They are growing up fast. I am not even close to being perfect, but I hope they are able to see how much I love them and love spending time with them.
  • Friendships- I want to be a better friend and move out of my shyness and mold myself into someone who is more friendly and more open. I had a really hard time with this one, but I made progress. I made a life-long friend this year and it is one friendship that I'm proud of. I don't feel like I'm always giving to the relationship and getting nothing out of it. I like this person because they like me for who I am and we get along great. We understand each other. I love those kinds of friendships.
  • Myself- I want to take time for myself. I think that after staying home and taking care of two kids all day, I tend to forget who I am and who I want to become. I want to take time to fit the mold of the person I've always dreamed of being. This ended up being a main focus of my year. I found that by really working on this one, all the others seemed to get worked on at the same time.
  • Talents- I've always thought that I haven't had many talents, but it's not true. I am going to take the time to develop those talents in a way that I will feel better about myself and that will help me be the person I desire. Even though I didn't have a ton of free time, I was able to work on this one and I'm excited for where it is headed. I have a lot of work to do on my talents to get them to the point I want, but that is exciting and can be worked on for many years to come.

Now, the moment you have all been waiting for....my Word of the Year for 2009 is...... Dive. (No, I am not taking up diving or any other water sport.) My definition for the year is "to enter deeply or plunge into a subject, activity, etc.". (Thank you dictionary.com) I think on of my biggest problems is fear. I'm afraid to just jump in and do it. When I took swimming lessons as a child, my teacher had to force me off the diving board because I was too afraid of what would happen when I hit the water. I think that echoes it lots of parts of my life. It look around at everything around me and think about all that could go wrong. (I am a huge worrywart.) For this year I just want to jump in and not let my fears convince me that I can't. I don't want to be afraid to be adventurous and step out of my comfort zone. I want to use the same areas as I did last year and just start diving into things.

Here are the ways I want to DIVE into my life:
  • Physically- I am going to dive into be more healthy. That is going to involve eating better and working out more. I want to make more food from scratch and do away with more sugar.
  • Spiritually- Dive into learning more about the gospel. Every week I am going to focus on a subject and look up scriptures and talks about the subject. I also want to attend the Temple every month.
  • Financially- Diving into debt reduction. This means better budgeting and finding ways to get some extra cash to cut the debt down.
  • Intellectually- I have been out of college for 3 years and I really miss it. I don't miss the tests, grades, and pressure, but I do miss the learning. I want to dive back into learning. Every month I want to visit the library and learn something about a person or subject of my choosing. I will check out a few books and if applicable, internet articles. In order to hold myself accountable, i will have to do monthly internet posts. If you find them too boring, feel free to skip over those.
  • Relationships- I feel like after 4 years of marriage, I forget how much fun dates can be. I want to dive back into the excitement of dating and gone on one fun and new date each month. The rules are: never done before, and under $15. I'm really excited for all the possibilities. I also want to dive into my girl's lives. I want to spend more time doing things with them and teaching them new things. They still have a lot to learn and I want to teach them.
  • Friendships- Appreciate the friendships I have and dive deeper into them. Make the effort to grow those friendships. Also, I want to dive into being more friendly to others. Who knows what will come out of it.
  • Myself- Dive into my individuality. I am 24 years old and don't really have my own style. I've thought about it in the last couple of months. I worry too much about what others think about me and the way I dress, wear my hair, do my makeup. I want to develop my own style and feel comfortable about wearing it. Other people wear it, why can't I? Confidence. I lack the confidence to wear what I want. (Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything drastic. I'm just going to learn to be more comfortable with myself.)
  • Talents- I going to dive in and start my own Etsy shop. I planned on doing it last year, but I let fear take hold and it held me back. I am just going to do it. I'll never know how good I am at what I do if I don't try.
I am a little nervous about putting all of this out there, but I need the accountability and the constant reminder. Here's to diving into a new year!

Why am I so excited for this week?

  1. Jethro is done with grad school.
  2. Haircut.
  3. I have someone to help me with my Webelos!!
  4. Yummy soup.
  5. Homemade bread.
  6. Jethro takes his Praxis.
  7. Start scrapbooking again.
  8. Katya goes back to preschool.
  9. New Year.
  10. Clean house.

New Year's Eve

We had a fabulous New Year's Eve at home. We had a fabulous feast of yummy snack foods and such that we don't usually have including shrimp, salmon, sparkling ciders, fruit trays, vegetable trays, and different sandwiches and other things. It was so yummy. We made the night so fun is that my family was here and also my brother-in-laws parents. We ate and played "Ticket to Ride" and "The Game of Life: Twists and turns.

My cute nephew

Everybody headed home about 10 so Megan and I were left awake because Jethro was in bed sick. Megan and I spent the rest of the evening playing Life and rang in the New Year that way. It was a blast.

One More Video

You know, it sure has been nice not being at work every day and spending so much time with my girls. I should just not work anymore. That would be sweet! Except for not having a paycheck, and not being able to support my family, and being bored, and playing games on my iPod all day, and starving. That would stink. OK, I guess I will go to work tomorrow.

Sadly, with me going to work, the frequency of videos here will likely diminish. (Not because Staci won't do it, but because I will probably take my Christmas gift with me everywhere!) Anyway, one thing that will encourage me greatly is if people keep voting every day for my video in the contest I am trying to win. Click here, and signup if you haven't, and then vote every day.

Here is the video of Cali walking down a very long hallway. DO NOT WATCH IT IN FULLSCREEN. It will probably make you throw up. I set it to music, and sped it up. I slowed it down when Cali screamed, because it is so cute.

Enjoy.

Good Gifts

Staci was right on the money when she suggested that we get the girls a table and chairs. The girls absolutely love them. Last night was a pretty rough one with sick babies and sick me. Katya woke up a bunch, and couldn't sleep. Staci was up in the middle of the night, and held Katya so she would sleep. I got up about 6 with the worst headache I have ever had. Anyway, it was really cute to have Katya sleep on me until about 8:30. Then, when Cali got up at 9:30, they were both very cute, and the read books at their table for an hour after breakfast. Katya didn't want to eat without Cali, so she kept saying she was done even though she was still hungry.

Here is a little video of them being happy and reading their books at their table.

Katya's Development

Every couple weeks, a physical therapist from Early Intervention (Kirsten) comes and works with Katya. She tracks her progress, makes goals, and tries to help Katya improve in her development. The funny thing is that Katya almost never performs for her. Last time, Kirsten told Staci that Katya needs to stand and play for five minutes. Katya can do that, but she doesn't want to stand and play for Kirsten. It is funny. She wants Katya to do squats. Katya does, but not in front of Kirsten. I got to do the appointment since I was home today, and it was fun to play with Katya and see how she interacts.

Kirsten always brings a bag of toys with her, and Katya knows the routine. I don't. I have never been to an appointment with Kirsten and Katya, so I didn't know how things went. Katya crawled over to the bag of toys and signed more, please! Kirsten knew that Katya wanted more toys. Katya would play with the toys for a little bit, and then ask for more.

Katya walked on a balance beam, put coins in a piggy-bank, and played with the caterpillar in the picture below. As you watch the video, look at how Katya pushes the caterpillar down, then gives it a little nudge, and then keeps her head down. That is one of her cute little mannerisms that makes me laugh every time I see her do it.
